What changed in GST for cars
- As of 22 September 2025, the GST rates on passenger vehicles in India were revised.
- Small cars (less than 4 m length, petrol <1200 cc or diesel <1500 cc) are now taxed at 18% GST.
- Bigger / luxury cars (longer than 4 m, or with larger engine) now attract 40% GST.
- Earlier, many small / compact / hybrid cars had GST 28% + cesses (sometimes ~50%).
- Therefore, the tax burden for many cars has gone down, and Maruti Suzuki (both Arena and Nexa lineups) has announced price reductions accordingly.
