The 2026 Formula One World Championship has entered one of its most important phases, with the season moving beyond the halfway mark and the championship picture beginning to take shape.

The latest major development came at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s Madring circuit on September 13. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth Grand Prix victory of the season, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. The result extended Antonelli’s advantage over teammate George Russell to 81 points.

With the Azerbaijan Grand Prix next on the calendar, attention now turns to whether Mercedes can maintain its advantage and whether rivals can reduce the gap before the championship reaches its decisive closing stages.

2026 Formula One World Championship: Where the title race stands

After 14 Grands Prix, Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship with 292 points. George Russell sits second on 211, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 191, Lando Norris on 186 and Charles Leclerc on 167. Max Verstappen is sixth with 145 points.

The numbers highlight just how unusual the 2026 season has become.

Antonelli has established a substantial points advantage, while several established names remain within striking distance of the positions immediately behind the Mercedes pair. Norris, Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen are separated by a relatively narrow points range compared with Antonelli’s lead.

For Verstappen in particular, the Spanish result leaves Red Bull with more ground to recover. The four-time world champion finished second in Madrid, but the points deficit means the remaining races will become increasingly important.

Antonelli’s remarkable 2026 campaign

Kimi Antonelli has emerged as the central figure of the 2026 championship.

His Madrid victory was his eighth of the season and came after another weekend in which Mercedes demonstrated strong race performance. Formula 1’s official report noted that Antonelli’s victory increased his championship advantage to 81 points over Russell.

The Italian’s season is particularly significant because the 2026 regulations represent a major technical reset for Formula 1. Teams are competing with a new generation of cars and power-unit technology, making adaptation and development particularly important.

Antonelli’s consistency has allowed him to capitalize on opportunities even when races have not followed a straightforward script.

The Spanish Grand Prix changed the conversation

The Madrid race also produced one of the biggest strategic talking points of the current championship.

Lando Norris started from pole position and initially appeared capable of challenging for victory. However, an early Virtual Safety Car period changed the strategic picture. Norris was unable to pit at the same moment as some of his rivals, while a slow pit stop compounded the problem.

He eventually recovered to third, but the lost opportunity was significant.

The FIA reported that Antonelli finished 4.351 seconds ahead of Verstappen, with Norris another 0.738 seconds behind.

Norris subsequently called for Formula 1 to examine the way Virtual Safety Car timing can influence races, including possible changes involving minimum VSC durations or pit-lane procedures. Those comments are part of an ongoing discussion about how sporting regulations can affect strategic outcomes.

Lewis Hamilton faces another setback

Ferrari’s weekend in Madrid was mixed.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth, but Lewis Hamilton’s race ended after only seven laps because of a brake problem. Ferrari has said it would investigate the failure.

Hamilton remains third in the championship standings on 191 points, but the retirement prevented him from adding to his tally in Spain.

That result also illustrates an important feature of the 2026 championship: reliability and race execution can have a major influence on the standings as the season progresses.

Mercedes has created a substantial advantage

The Drivers’ Championship is only part of the story.

Mercedes is also leading the Constructors’ Championship, giving the team a strong position in both title battles. Motorsport.com reported after the Spanish Grand Prix that Mercedes extended its advantage, while Ferrari lost ground relative to McLaren.

For Mercedes, the immediate challenge is maintaining development momentum while managing the demands of a long season.

The team has two drivers occupying the top two positions in the Drivers’ Championship, giving it a significant points cushion. That also creates an interesting internal dynamic because Russell remains the closest challenger to Antonelli.

What makes the 2026 season different?

The 2026 Formula One regulations introduced a major technical change.

The new generation of cars was introduced alongside revised power-unit regulations and the move toward 100% advanced sustainable fuels. The FIA’s original 2026 calendar announcement described the season as the beginning of a new generation of Formula 1 cars, with new regulations, new teams and a new venue forming part of the championship’s major changes.

The new technical era has made development particularly important.

Teams are learning how to extract performance from different aerodynamic concepts, power-unit characteristics and energy-management strategies. As the season continues, development races between manufacturers could become just as important as what happens during individual Grands Prix.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix is next

The next round of the championship is the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit.

Formula 1’s official timetable confirms that the race will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, with the Grand Prix scheduled for 51 laps around the 6.003-kilometre Baku circuit. Qualifying is scheduled for Friday, September 25.

Baku brings a very different challenge from Madrid.

Its combination of long straights, heavy braking zones and a tight street-circuit section means qualifying position, tyre management, energy deployment and race strategy can all become critical. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has also developed a reputation for producing unpredictable races, making it an important test of Mercedes’ current advantage.

The championship battles to watch

The most obvious storyline is Antonelli’s championship lead, but the fight behind him is also developing quickly.

George Russell’s second position gives Mercedes a strong hold on the top two places. Hamilton and Norris are separated by only five points, while Leclerc remains close behind. Verstappen’s position means Red Bull needs a stronger run of results if it is to close the gap to the leading Mercedes drivers.

McLaren also has an important development challenge ahead. The team remains involved in the championship picture, but Oscar Piastri has experienced a more difficult 2026 campaign than teammate Norris. Recent reporting has highlighted concerns around Piastri’s adaptation to the new-generation car and qualifying performance.

Why the final part of 2026 matters

With the championship entering its later stages, every retirement, strategic error and development upgrade could have a disproportionate effect on the final standings.

Antonelli has built a substantial advantage, but Formula 1 championships can change quickly when reliability problems or difficult weekends affect a leading driver.

The next few races should therefore provide a clearer indication of whether Mercedes can control the championship through the closing rounds or whether Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren can create sustained pressure.

For fans following the 2026 Formula One World Championship, Azerbaijan represents the next major checkpoint in what has already become a season defined by new regulations, emerging talent, strategic controversy and a rapidly developing title picture.

2026 Formula One World Championship

The 2026 championship is the first full season of Formula 1’s latest technical era. The regulations introduced a new generation of cars and power units, while the championship also features Cadillac as a new team. The original calendar contained 24 Grands Prix, with Madrid making its Formula 1 debut in September.

The Spanish Grand Prix was therefore more than another race on the calendar. It was the first Formula 1 event at Madrid’s new Madring circuit, and Antonelli became the inaugural winner at the venue.
