Maruti Suzuki e Vitara

Maruti Suzuki — India’s largest automobile manufacturer — has formally entered the electric vehicle (EV) segment with the launch of the e Vitara SUV in India on 17 February 2026. Built on the dedicated HEARTECT-e platform designed for EVs, the e Vitara marks an important milestone as Maruti’s first mass-market battery electric vehicle (BEV) and reflects its broader push into electrification. Production began earlier in 2025, and this model is also set for global exports from India to more than 100 markets.

Launch Highlights & Pricing

The e Vitara is priced at ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom under an innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model, where the battery is charged separately at ₹3.99 per kilometre driven — a move designed to lower upfront costs and make EV ownership more accessible. Bookings are open with a token amount, and deliveries are expected to begin soon at authorised Nexa dealerships.

Powertrain, Range & Features

The e Vitara comes in two battery pack options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh — offering claimed ranges that stretch up to 543 km on a full charge. Power is delivered via a front-motor setup, with the larger battery pack delivering stronger performance.

Internally, the SUV features modern amenities such as a digital cluster, touchscreen infotainment with connectivity features, and a suite of driver-aids. Structural design is based on Maruti Suzuki’s new HEARTECT-e EV platform, which enhances rigidity and safety while accommodating EV-specific hardware.

Market Impact & Strategic Significance

The launch of the e Vitara is significant for several reasons:

  • Maruti’s EV Entry: The company — historically dominant in ICE cars — now has a BEV platform and product.
  • Competitive Pricing: Positioned competitively against rivals in the mid-size electric SUV space, including the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV and more.
  • Global Strategy: India-made units are being exported to global markets, supporting Maruti’s “Make in India, Make for the World” strategy.
