What Is Shivratri?
Shivratri, especially Maha Shivratri, is one of the most sacred festivals in the Hindu calendar dedicated to Lord Shiva. It falls on the Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi tithi, celebrated with fasting, night-long vigils, prayer, and meditation. The festival commemorates the divine union of Shiva and Parvati and symbolises spiritual enlightenment and the destruction of ignorance.
Devotees across India and the world prepare for this holy night with intense devotion, rituals and deep reflection. Maha Shivratri also marks an opportunity for devotees to perform midnight puja (Nishita Kaal) and connect with inner transformation.
📅 Shivratri 2026 — Date & Auspicious Timing
This year Shivratri will be observed on Sunday, 15 February 2026 — the festival night traditionally begins at sunset and continues past midnight into the early hours of 16 February.
The Nishita Kaal (powerful midnight window) — often considered the most auspicious time for Shiva worship — lasts approximately for about 51 minutes after midnight. Devotees perform Shiva Abhishek and chant mantras during this period for enhanced spiritual benefit.
🕉️ Spiritual Significance
Maha Shivratri — literally “The Great Night of Shiva” — represents the inner awakening and cosmic transformation. Worshipping Lord Shiva on this day is believed to help the devotee break cycles of ignorance and ego, leading to spiritual growth and peace.
Traditional beliefs also associate Shiva’s cosmic dance (Tandava) and his union with Goddess Parvati with this night, symbolising balance of energies and divine union.
🪔 Traditional Rituals & Practices

🔸 Fasting & Devotion
Most devotees observe a full-day fast until next morning, maintaining purity of mind and body as a mark of discipline and devotion.
🔸 Night-long Vigil & Puja (Abhishek)
Shivratri night calls for staying up awake with prayer, meditation, and chanting of sacred mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya”. Lord Shiva’s idol or Shivlinga is bathed with holy substances such as Ganga water, milk, honey and offered Bilva leaves (Bel patra).
🔸 Auspicious Timings
- First Prahar: early evening
- Nishita Kaal: midnight puja
- Fourth Prahar: early morning
Timing and sequence of worship, especially at Nishita Kaal, are believed to maximise spiritual benefit.
